The liga consists of a total of 18 teams, competing in two tournaments. The teams compete in a home and away series over the course of 17 weeks. Planet League is a non-profit organization that uses the power of football to inspire, educate and mobilize fans, clubs and players to take climate action. They work with clubs and their community organizations to help them move towards more sustainable operations. Planet league also runs a unique sustainability tournament that gives fans the chance to represent their club as they take green actions and challenges throughout the competition. Fans can compete to win a range of money-can’t-buy-prizes by taking part in each week's challenge, from having a meat-free meal to using their car less.

Players must sign up for a Planetliga team with a minimum of 9 paid members. If a team does not reach the required number of paid members before the deadline, the first wait-listed team will be bumped in to their spot (given they have 9 players paid). A full time player is permitted to play for one team in playoffs and up to 2 teams in regular season league. If a player is unable to participate in the playoffs or regular season, they must notify the league coordinator and provide a doctor's note/letter.

During the season, League Teams play in a series of League Sanctioned games. At the end of the season, teams select a champion to send to the Championship match. The champion reigns over the Echo Cluster until a challenger unseats them.

During the Championship matches, each team plays a short format game with two other teams. The team that earns the highest number of points wins the Championship. Teams also receive bonus points for completing extra objectives, such as scoring a goal and collecting trophies. League teams also have the option to play a limited number of Long Format games in the season. These games award different points for a player's position within the game. This is intended to encourage a diverse range of gameplay options for all types of players. In addition to the regular season and playoffs, there are several tournaments during the year.
